*************spoiler Alert****************I am a big Charlaine Harris fan. I have read all her series and try to find anything she has written. She is my favorite author. I had read on line that Charlaine Harris was raped and after her experience wrote this book. I think she did a magnificent job taking her own terrible personal experience and turning it into a mystery and also a lesson. What surprised me was how Charlaine Harris shows us through the book how a rape effects a woman's entire life. From the act itself, the violation and fear, and then the hospital and police, the entire experience is written for our education. The way people look at the victim and talk to her. Some may believe that she deserved this somehow or that she should run and hide in shame after a rape occurs. The book shows how a serial rapist destroys lives, each one effecting the woman in different ways. The women who died. The woman who lost her lover now that she is "damaged goods". The woman who hid and was to ashamed to tell the police. And the women who fight back.
Charlaine Harris' main character is a young woman named Nickie. She is a beautiful model who leaves New York to go home to the south. Northern and Southern differences are discussed. Racism is talked about in the book, who is the suspect? Where will the police look first? Nickie and a fellow survivor form a bond as they try to figure out who the rapist is in the small town where they grew up. A place where people didn't lock their doors. Where everyone knows you.
It is a wonderful mystery and well told. It is not predictable. While I read this book the hair would stand up on my arms thinking about the woman's fear and violation. I would recommend this book to a friend and every woman out there. And ever man who ever wondered how a woman feels in her heart when violated. It is dark, and I would not recommend this book for teenagers or people who are sensitive. I felt like CH was writing from her heart and I really appreciated her knowledge. The fact that it is wrapped in a great mystery, definitely makes it worth reading.
This book is not about vampires, werewolves, or fairies. Nothing supernatural. Just a great mystery.

A Secret Rage (Audible Audio Edition) Charlaine Harris Johanna Parker Recorded Books Books Reviews
A great read. What one would expect from the author!
This story is so compelling, graphic and raw with emotion. Ms Harris has laid out all the feelings one would have when faced with such a situation. Well worth reading! Bravo Ms Harris.
I'm a huge Charlaine fan and think I have now read close to 95% of all her work. She's such an interesting writer, however this earlier book just was "okay" I felt. Lagged in parts, wasn't overly exciting and the ending was meh.
**SPOILERS**
"A Secret Rage" is an older Charlaine Harris work, reminiscent of the Lily Bard series. The subject matter is dark & could be too disturbing for some readers; this book is definitely not a cozy. Harris manages to pull of the subject of rape very delicately, mainly because of her strong female lead in Nickie Callahan. We see a woman who had been raped but fights back. She refuses to feel sorry for herself, & she is true to her emotions following the rape.
Another high point of this book, for me, was the theme of the old South meeting with new ways. Harries also deals with racism in a way that rings true, though her book was published over 20 years ago. Somehow, Nickie manages to be a strong woman and a true southern belle, which is a great message for southern women then & today.
After becoming a huge fan of Ms Harris' paranormal novels I really had to read everything I could find.
This novel is a simple gothic told in her style. It has little bit of southernisms that you expect from this multitalented author. The characters are crisp and intelligent and strong. The dark theme of rape and its effect on the women who suffer it is handled cleanly and well. Being set in the deep south like most of her novels this tale shows us the different ways that subcultures within our own deal with the victim.
I was actually both surprised and happy at how she dealt with the climax of this story. Well the subject matter is dark this novel left me feeling content.
Are all things I felt when reading this book. I cried and laughed with the heroine. I cheered for her bravery. I understood what she was feeling. So many of us have experienced in our lives some version of this story. I wanted to help in the fight too. I'm an avid fan, but I think this was the best book I have read of yours, Charlaine. Great job.
As with most of Harris's novels, there's a dark story beneath interesting characters and more trivial issues (see Shakespeare series).
This is one of her earlier books, and I'm glad I bought it.
Nickie is an interesting character, as are her best friend and her brother. What I found interesting about this novel was the contrast between the social adaptation, Nickie's readjustment to a small town life, with the crimes, and the subsequent growth Nickie endures.
I was surprised by who the guilty party was, but it made sense; I didn't feel cheated (as sometimes may happen), and I thought that relationships between the characters evolved quite nicely (and logically). I know I'm being ambiguous, but I do not want to spoil it.
If you're interested in reading a Charlaine Harris novel that has no supernatural touches, go for it. It's excellent.
