There are two major camps on getting children to sleep through the night. These methods are hotly debated and their oppositional forces can look like a battle scene from Game of Thrones. Arrows fly across internet camps and it all feels a bit life threatening. 1.Cry it out! - Deal breaker for many parents. 2.Do Whatever It Takes, All Day and All Night Long To get your child the F to sleep. - Deal breaker for those of us who actually need real sleep to function in the real world. There are other more “gentle" approaches. These offer the much coveted “NO Cry” result. No cry - sorry to report - is Fantasy Island. The no cry unicorn baby is, for most of us, a mythological creature. Will there be crying? Probably. Can you respond and offer support? Absolutely. Is it a prescriptive timed, clock approach? No. You are the expert on your child. I teach a method that helps to hone your intuition on what cries need attending to and what cries are the sound of self soothing. You do not have to leave your child alone to "cry-it-out" in order to learn the skills of autonomous sleep. The Compassionate Sleep Solution is a gentle, honest and realistic approach. Because in reality our children rarely have a gentle reaction to our ideas of what is best for them. Eileen Henry is one of the original sleep consultants in the U.S. After working with thousands of families for almost two decades she has developed the best method for dealing with a baby's very natural process of crying as well as the unnatural process of a parent having to listen to it. The Compassionate Sleep Solution will guide you through the process and show you the way to the following reality. Sleep is a developmental skill that all babies and toddlers can learn. Since crying can be a part of that reality, my method will teach you how to calm the cry.

I thought it was useful. I don't read parenting books thinking I will necessarily go all the way with the author. Her technique boils down to a version of CIO and I won't do that with my baby. Or some call it "ferberizing" - letting them cry but checking in on them from time to time. That's not for us. I trust that I can keep helping him fall asleep, and eventually his little brain will be able to do it for himself most of the time, not just some of the time. I'm not worried about my baby being too dependent on me, cuz he's a baby! What I liked about the book was how she talks about the energy of the day, as a key to getting sleep at night. My baby sleeps well at night and I realized that our days sound a lot like the days she recommends . . quiet, kind of repetitive, easy energy . . she calls what happens during the day the "foundation" for good sleep. That made so much sense to me! I never considered that that might be part of why my baby sleeps well. I also got some good tips for naps. All in all I got a few good ideas from this book and that's all it takes for me to consider something a good parenting book.
I found her tone pretty funny but yes edgy for sure. Also to the author - not all your readers are partnered, and not all of them are heterosexual! sigh. It's 2017 I wish the word was out more.
But overall a good book!

The Compassionate Sleep Solution Calming the Cry Eileen Henry 9781539092476 Books Reviews
It’s goid at giving you a basic idea but i feel like you need to do an actual consultation to make it work. It’s not as easy as it seems.
Such a well-written book by a hilarious and knowledge woman! Filled with practical advice and step by step instructions. Definitely a must read for all expectant and new parents!
A helpful book that offers some good advice. I found it a little long-winded and repetitive at times. But, certainly a comprehensive read with some lovely picture - painting. I highly recommend it!
This philosophy has resonated with me and helped us so much with our one year old twins. With multiples especially, it's easy to find CIO-like advice for sleep, but this book helped me find a path that was more responsive, compassionate (for all that that means), and respectful. It also made me a much more confident mom when it came to sleep, and that alone made a big difference for all of us.
I really wanted to love this book after hearing about it on Janet Lansbury's blog. I read it looking for advice on improving my toddler's sleep as well as tips for getting newborns started off on the right foot, but I didn't find it helpful in either case. I found this book very lacking in actual advice other than to let your child cry for 7-14-21 minutes before checking on him or her.
If you're sensitive to the author's tone when you read, this may not be the book for you - every time I picked it up I felt like she was berating me, and I felt awful by the time I put it down. I've never left a negative book review before, but I was so put off by this book I have to. Definitely would not recommend.
The content of this book is five stars! It is truly useful in creating a personal plan to help your baby get the best sleep possible! Don't go against your instincts with a one size fits all plan that is disrespectful to your infant, but actually find a solution to not sleeping! (My daughter was 14 mos when I read this book). The writing could use some editing and reorganization. It's a bit all over the place for a while and there is a chapter on sex life that is poorly placed and felt longer than the whole rest of the book! Yes, it's important, but I really just needed sleep after 4.5 years of parenting without.
So, despite the writing downfalls, I highly recommend this book for parents who really really need to change something about their chlds sleep.
I found no new information in this book that is not already available on her site or Janet Lansbury's site (the latter is my go to parenting resource that I LOVE). As a RIE practicing parent, I was hoping for more, but this was all stuff I already knew. I didn't find specific challenges addressed, (our challenge is that after helping, but not fixing, sleep for my 5 month old, he continues to wake up every 30-90 minutes through out the night. he was a great sleeper, going down from sleepy to asleep on his own in his own bed 90% of the time, until a few large develpmental leaps began 1.5 months ago. i am stumped at addressing these. i have 2 other children and we live in a 900 square foot home ... if someone is up screaming then we are all up). A FAQ or frequent challenges section would be nice but imagine she wants you to book a sleep consultation for that. I know I have to put in real effort to help my child learn to sleep on his own, I know he will resist change and breaking habits, i know calm consistency is the key .... but I found little to no new information here. The entire book was written like a long, rambly, unclear blog post, not a paperback worth $15. I was disappointed.
